Dirk Weiler was born in Germany, where he studied dance and received his Masters degree in Musical Theatre at the renowned Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. After receiving his degree he continued his studies in the dance department of the Folkwang Hochschule. Dance teachers include Walter Nicks, Jean Cebron, Judy Ann Bassing, Ron Daniels, and Derek Williams. Prior to coming to New York in 1998 to pursue vocal studies at the Manhattan School of Music, City College of New York and Brooklyn College (where he received his Masters of Music degree), he performed with the dance theatre company of Claudia Lichtblau, gave concerts throughout Europe and appeared in productions like Company, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, and many others. Mr. Weiler was selected to participate in master classes with Walter Berry and Cord Garben and won second prize at the Lotte Lenya Competition for Singers in 1999 and as a former and founding member of the Kabarett Kollektif the 2006 Nightlife Award for Unique Cabaret Performance. As a soloist, he has performed the classical as well as the popular repertoire in Europe, the United States and Australia. He starred twice as Macheath in Brecht/Weill's The Three Penny and has appeared in Weill's 'Johnny Johnson' at the New York Public Library. He has sung leading operatic roles in Le Nozze di Figaro (Count), The Merry Widow (Danilo), La Bohème (Schaunard), and Die Zauberflöte (Papageno). As an actor, he recently played in Place Setting at Center Stage, On the Banks of the Surreal at Bank Street Theatre, sang Dutch Schultz in The True Last Words of Dutch Schultz by Eric Salzman at Symphony Space and played The Waiter at the first London Fringe Festival at the Jermyn Street Theatre. An active and versatile performer, Mr. Weiler was a founding member of thedramaloft Inc., an entertainment incubator located in New York City, and an avid tap dancer and instructor. He was the tap dance instructor at the Musical Theatre Department of the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen from 1992-1998. he has taught internationally and in New York at the Alvin Ailey School, Steps on Broadway and at the Bridge for Dance. |
